Students Call Off Planned Protest, Request Dialogue with Government

In a significant turn of events university students
from across the country have called off their scheduled demonstration against the controversial new university funding model.

The decision came after accusations that the government was allegedly using organized goons to disrupt the peaceful protest.

Led by prominent student leaders Zadock Okoth (President, Kenyatta University), Ramesh Saxena (Secretary General, University of Nairobi), Clare Gathoga (Kenyatta University),

While addressing their strong opposition to the new funding model, which they argue unfairly burdens students with higher education costs, the student leaders emphasized their willingness to engage in meaningful dialogue to find a solution that benefits all students.

“We are open to discussions, but we will not be silenced by intimidation. Our goal is to ensure affordable and accessible education for every student in this country, and we believe this can be achieved through constructive conversations, not disruption,” said Zadock Okoth.

Over the past week, the planned protests had gained traction, with students from various universities expressing their dissatisfaction with the rapid introduction of the new funding model. The students argue that the government failed to consult them adequately, resulting in a policy that they believe is detrimental to their educational future.

Despite canceling the protest, the student leaders remain committed to pushing for a fairer system and have urged the government to engage with them in good faith. They warned that continued delays in addressing their concerns could lead to more demonstrations in the future.
