Revolutionizing Democracy: AI and Digital Media in Kenyan Elections
Hon. Stephen Kalonzo Musyoka, EGH, SC, delivered a visionary keynote at the Regional Conference on AI and Digital Media in Elections, emphasizing the transformative potential of Artificial Intelligence (AI) and digital media in ensuring free, fair, and credible elections. The conference, held as Kenya prepares for its 2027 General Elections, provided a platform for critical discussions on leveraging technology for electoral justice while addressing emerging challenges.
Hon. Musyoka reflected on Kenya's 33-year journey since the return of multiparty democracy, highlighting the ongoing struggles with electoral mistrust and the pivotal role of technology in achieving true democratic governance.

“Elections must reflect the will of the people,” he remarked. “Electoral technologies like AI must enhance, not undermine, this process by being simple, verifiable, free, and fair.”

Hon. Musyoka called for the urgent reconstitution of the Independent Electoral and Boundaries Commission (IEBC) to prepare for 2027, stressing that delays in reforms risk compromising the integrity of the elections.

He also urged the IEBC to conduct robust voter education on digital tools, ensuring inclusivity and transparency across all demographics, particularly Gen-Z and Millennial voters, who represent the majority.

Acknowledging the increasing influence of platforms like TikTok and user-generated content in modern campaigns, he raised pertinent questions about regulating ethical conduct and disinformation in digital spaces. He cautioned against the misuse of AI in generating fake content, underscoring the dangers of disinformation in the electoral process.

“As we embrace digital tools, we must be vigilant against the erosion of truth and justice. AI offers immense potential but also poses grave risks when used to manipulate facts and distort reality,” he warned.

Dr. Musyoka concluded by urging stakeholders voters, electoral bodies, the judiciary, and policymakersto collaborate on crafting frameworks that balance innovation with ethical safeguards. “The time to act is now. Let us ensure the 2027 elections stand as a beacon of electoral justice and technological integrity.”
