The State Department of Transport, under the leadership of Principal Secretary Mohammed Dagar, proudly presided over the 61st Graduation Ceremony of the Railway Training Institute (RTI) for the academic years 2022-2023 and 2023-2024. A total of 1,415 graduates were ushered into the job market, equipped with specialized skills in engineering, business, maritime studies, and the railway sector.
Speaking at the ceremony, PS Mohammed Dagar highlighted RTI’s pivotal role as one of the country’s oldest and most specialized institutions, supporting Kenya’s railway sector, which has been operational for over 100 years. The institute has been instrumental in building competencies that sustain Kenya’s infrastructure, including both the Standard Gauge Railway (SGR) and the historical Meter Gauge Railway (MGR).

"The Railway Training Institute stands as a beacon of affordable, specialized training in transportation and has consistently provided skilled graduates to government agencies, including Kenya Railways and other institutions within the region," PS Dagar remarked.
The PS also recognized Kenya’s leadership in the region for rail transportation, emphasizing ongoing efforts to enhance connectivity. These include linking the SGR and MGR to Uganda and developing Nairobi's commuter rail system, spanning 168 kilometers, to expand affordable and efficient transport options for Kenyans.

Additionally, he acknowledged RTI's regional impact, with East African students joining the institute to benchmark and acquire critical skills. This underscores Kenya’s growing role as a transportation hub within the region.

The ceremony also celebrated initiatives to enhance diversity and gender inclusivity. Approximately 45% of this year’s graduates were women, with many supported by scholarships from county governments and other institutions. PS Daga reaffirmed the government’s commitment to empowering women in the transport sector and ensuring equitable access to education and opportunities.

RTI continues to offer vital certifications such as STCW, coxswain training, and electrical engineering, which are in high demand across sectors including rail, maritime, and aviation.

“This institution plays a critical role not only in railway transport but in supporting Kenya Ports Authority, Kenya Maritime Authority, and other infrastructure agencies. The government remains committed to growing these sectors for the benefit of Kenyans and regional integration,” PS Daga stated.

The graduates will join various sectors, including government agencies and private organizations, contributing to the development of Kenya's transportation infrastructure and beyond.
