The Law Society of Kenya (LSK), under the leadership of President Faith Odhiambo, has issued a scathing condemnation of the police brutality witnessed during the recent Gen Z-led protests, in which at least 60 young Kenyans were reportedly killed.
Citing findings from the Independent Policing Oversight Authority (IPOA), which confirmed the deaths but acknowledged that only six cases have been concluded, the LSK criticized the lack of accountability and transparency in addressing these tragic incidents.
“It is unacceptable that lives have been lost and yet the response has been delay, denial, and relocation,” said Odhiambo. “We demand prosecution, not protection.”
During a press conference, Odhiambo called on the National Security Council, the Director of Public Prosecutions (DPP), and the National Police Service Commission (NPSC) to expedite investigations and ensure those responsible are brought to justice.
The LSK also expressed outrage at recent remarks made in Parliament by Mandera North MP Bashir Abdullahi and Homa Bay Town MP Peter Kaluma, who mocked the Gen Z movement and dismissed the killings during debate spurred by the BBC documentary “Blood Parliament.”
“These comments are not only deeply insensitive but dangerously dismissive of the lives lost,” Odhiambo asserted. “Such propaganda erodes the integrity of our Parliament and invites national and international ridicule. Leaders must be held to a higher standard.”
LSK Vice President Mwaura Kabata reaffirmed the Society’s position, emphasizing that impunity within the security sector cannot be tolerated.
“We stand with the families of the victims and with every Kenyan demanding justice,” Odhiambo concluded. “No amount of propaganda or parliamentary mockery will silence the truth.”
