A Nation on the Edge": NCCK IssA Nation on the Edge": NCCK Issues Scathing Rebuke of Government Failures, Calls for National Awakening
By Bruno Aero
The Executive Committee of the National Council of Churches of Kenya (NCCK), led by Rev. Elias Ogola and Rev. Canon Kinyanjui, has concluded a solemn two-day reflection meeting at Jumuia Conference and Country Home in Limuru.
With heavy hearts, the clergy and church leaders delivered a stark warning about the direction the nation is taking, stating unequivocally that Kenya is on the brink of disaster.
In a heartfelt letter to the public, the clergy highlighted deep systemic failures and escalating human suffering, outlining eight key areas of grave concern:
A Nation in Crisis
Kenya’s social and political fabric is unraveling, marked by:
Mass youth unemployment and underemployment leading to despair.
Elite-driven corruption fueled by unchecked political patronage.
Severe fiscal distress, spiraling debt, and institutional collapse.
Rev. Ogola lamented, "We are raising a generation that feels death is a welcome relief from their misery. Our models show Kenya is at the edge of disaster."
State-Sponsored Abductions and Killings
The NCCK accused the government of running a police state and using fear to govern.
"We cry with the families of the abducted, tortured, and slain youths. Why is the State terrorizing its citizens instead of upholding the Constitution?" the statement reads.
The clergy have called for a national day of prayer and support on Sunday, June 29, to focus on youth justice and aid for injured protesters.
Rigging the 2027 Elections
The Council warns of a deliberate attempt to rig the 2027 polls by violating court orders in appointing IEBC commissioners. They also questioned efforts to intimidate or purge the Supreme Court, fearing a judiciary compromised by executive cronies.
Economic Breakdown
The church labeled the government’s budget "a house of cards," noting that over 50% of salaried income is taxed while businesses are fleeing the country.
"Are we being set up for more debt and taxes just to feed government extravagance?"
Political ‘Empowerment’ Gimmicks
NCCK slammed politicians for using fake "empowerment drives" to buy votes, likening them to farmers baiting chickens with maize.
"This is not leadership. It is manipulation and mockery of the people’s dignity."
Kenya's Involvement in Foreign Conflicts
Expressing alarm, the clergy condemned the government’s alleged support for rebel forces in Sudan and the DRC.
"Kenya used to be a haven of peace. Now, our foreign policy is dragging us into dangerous entanglements that will come back to haunt us."
Politicians Polluting the Pulpit
NCCK demanded an end to political campaigning in churches, urging congregations to reject political speeches in sacred spaces and enforce anonymous giving.
"Our churches must be houses of prayer — not dens of robbers," they stated.
Call to Action
The clergy concluded with a national call to conscience and resistance:
“Let every Kenyan rise up in prayer, protest, and purposeful action. Refuse to be bought. Demand justice. Demand dignity. We are a nation on the edge — and only the truth will save us.”ues Scathing Rebuke of Government Failures, Calls for National Awakening
