FIDA-Kenya Demands Accountability and Justice Following Deadly Protests

By Bruno Aero
The Federation of Women Lawyers in Kenya (FIDA-Kenya) has condemned the violent events that unfolded during recent protests, resulting in at least 50 deaths, hundreds of injuries, and numerous cases of abductions and forced disappearances. The organization is calling for immediate accountability and justice for the victims and survivors.

FIDA-Kenya Chairperson Christine Kungu stated that the nation is mourning the loss of lives, including 12-year-old Bridget Wainaina, who was hit by a stray bullet while inside her family compound. The organization demands that the Inspector General of the National Police Service takes immediate action to arrest and arraign officers who fired at peaceful protesters, invaded homes, or colluded with criminal gangs.

The group is also demanding an independent investigation into police brutality, abductions, and sexual violence, including rape and harassment. They are particularly concerned about the rise in cases of women being harassed, assaulted, and raped during the unrest.

FIDA-Kenya has activated a Response Centre to offer legal aid and psychosocial support to victims and witnesses of police brutality, sexual violence, and intimidation. They urge survivors to report cases and seek support through their hotlines or visit their offices.

The organization is also calling on the Head of State, President William Ruto, to lead from the front and initiate a process of justice, reform, and healing to address the growing rift between citizens and law enforcement.
