The Commissioner of Prisons, Mr. Patrick Aranduh, has reaffirmed the Kenya Prisons Service's commitment to modernizing correctional facilities in line with the recommendations of the Maraga Reforms Report.
Speaking during the launch of the Ethics and Anti-Corruption Commission (EACC) report on the examination of systems, policies, procedures, and practices within the Kenya Prisons Service, Mr. Aranduh emphasized the urgent need to overhaul legal frameworks and regulatory policies guiding prison enterprises and inmate management.
He expressed gratitude to the Judiciary and EACC for their collaborative support, which he noted has helped dismantle entrenched networks of corruption and inefficiencies within the correctional system.
“While we continue to face delays in staff housing and welfare improvements due to limited Treasury funding, the little resources available have already made a meaningful impact,” said Aranduh. “We remain optimistic and committed to transforming Kenya’s prisons into truly rehabilitative institutions.”
The Commissioner further acknowledged that most prison facilities across the country still require extensive improvement. He welcomed the EACC’s recommendations as an important guide to enhancing operational efficiency and promoting integrity.
Mr. Aranduh concluded by reaffirming the Prisons Service’s readiness to work with all relevant government stakeholders to ensure full implementation of the reforms and improvement of inmate welfare and staff conditions.
