Empowering the Future: 500 Women and Youth in Murang'a Receive Digital Skills Training

significant stride toward promoting digital inclusion and economic empowerment, 500 women and youth across several sub-counties in Murang'a County, Kenya, have benefited from a five-day Digital Skills Training Program. This initiative, now in its third edition in Murang'a, was delivered through a strategic partnership between Huawei Kenya, Computers for Schools Kenya (CFSK), the Joyful Women Organization, and MaMa Doing Good.

Bridging the Digital Divide

The training focused on practical, market-relevant digital skills aimed at unlocking new opportunities in business, employment, and innovation. According to recent data from the World Bank's 2023 Digital Inclusion Report, only 38% of rural youth in Kenya possess basic ICT skills, compared to 67% in urban areas. This significant gap in digital literacy limits equitable access to opportunity, making initiatives like this program crucial for bridging the digital divide.

The program's closing ceremony emphasized that digital literacy is no longer a luxury—it is a powerful enabler of economic independence, resilience, and participation in the modern economy. "Digital skills are the new currency of opportunity," said Ms. Joycelyn Mwikali, Director of Corporate Services at MaMa Doing Good. "This training is opening doors for 500 women and youth in Murang'a County. By equipping them with the right knowledge, we're empowering participants to harness technology for entrepreneurship, innovation, and sustainable livelihoods.

The program highlights a shared commitment by Huawei Kenya, CFSK, Joyful Women Organization, and MaMa Doing Good to ensure that women and youth are not just included—but positioned as leaders in Kenya's rapidly evolving digital economy. With the World Bank's Future of Work report projecting that over 60% of jobs in Kenya by 2030 will require advanced digital and cognitive skills, investing in future-ready training is essential.

The training has equipped participants with foundational digital skills, enhancing their employability, creating pathways to online work, freelancing, e-commerce, and empowering them to become active, self-sufficient participants in the digital economy. For women and youth in Murang'a, this program marks a powerful step forward toward a more inclusive, connected, and prosperous future.
As Maureen Mwaniki, Director of Public Affairs at Huawei Kenya, noted, "Our goal is to ensure digital empowerment reaches women across the country driving inclusion and bridging the digital divide.
