Mike Sonko's Political Comeback: National Economic Development Party Gets Green Light

Former Nairobi Governor Hon Mike Sonko has achieved a significant political milestone with the approval of his new party, the National Economic Development Party (NEDP). Sonko received the party's registration certificate on Tuesday, December 9, 2025, at the Office of the Registrar of Political Parties (ORPP) in Westlands, Nairobi.
This marks a major step in Sonko's bid to revive his political career ahead of the 2027 general elections. The NEDP is expected to provide Sonko with a new platform to pursue his political ambitions, despite his impeachment as Nairobi Governor in 2020, which barred him from contesting for public office.¹ ² ³
Sonko, who was accompanied by senior party officials and supporters, is considered the de facto leader of NEDP, although his formal installation as party leader is expected in early 2026. The party's registration is a significant development, given Sonko's past fallout with senior government officials, including former President Uhuru Kenyatta.
The ORPP has also invited public feedback on other recently submitted parties, including the People Centred Party (PEC) and the United Super Alliance Party (USAP), with a seven-day window for submissions.
