NAIROBI COUNTY HEALTH UNIONS GIVE 7 DAY NOTICE OF STRIKE ACTION

Speaking during the brief Dr Boaz Onchari of (KNUNN) emphasized and Joined by the amalgated health agencies in nairobi county health unions cocus said that all stakeholders are  disappointed and frustration arising from the conduct of the Nairobi City County Government as our employer.

Despite numerous meetings and several agreements signed over the past two years, little to no progress has been made. The County Government has persistently ignored these agreements, treating serious labour concerns as routine matters unworthy of action.

As we speak today, while other counties continue to pay salaries on time, the Nairobi City County Government has failed to pay health workers their December salaries. This situation appears to cause no concern, as no responsible officer has come forward to explain the delay.

The continued disregard for laid-down policies has further deepened the frustrations faced by healthcare workers. While we strive to uphold Nairobi County’s slogan of “a city of hope, order, dignity, and opportunities,” it is unfortunate that healthcare workers have been stripped of dignity and hope, undermining efforts to deliver effective healthcare services.

The health sector in Nairobi County remains severely destabilized due to poor human resource management. Critical HR responsibilities have been entrusted to an officer who lacks the requisite qualifications to manage such a sensitive docket. This negligence has been repeatedly raised with the employer, yet no corrective action has been taken.
The County Government has failed to address the following key grievances, among many others:
Non-implementation of signed Return-To-Work Agreements
Unfair and delayed promotions and redesignations for deserving officers (2023/2024)
Ignoring PSC-approved schemes of service and career frameworks
Delayed confirmation of officers into permanent and pensionable terms
Failure to replace staff who have resigned, retired, or passed on, leading to severe staff shortages and burnout
Delayed payment of salaries and failure to remit statutory deductions
Failure to implement the SRC 2024 salary increments
Failure to conclude and adopt pending Collective Bargaining Agreements (CBAs)
Pending gratuity payments for former NMS staff
Unstable and unreliable medical insurance cover
Non-implementation of approved staff establishments and professional career guidelines/schemes of service
These issues fall squarely within the employer’s mandate, yet they have been deliberately and adamantly ignored.
For this reason, the health unions issued a seven (7) day strike notice effective 8th January 2026.
We hereby notify the general public that should the Nairobi City County Government fail to address and resolve the above demands within the stipulated notice period, healthcare workers will commence a total strike on 16th January 2026 at 12:01 a.m.
All health workers will withdraw their services and stay away from their workstations until all grievances are fully addressed.
Members of the public seeking services from Nairobi County health facilities are advised to make prior arrangements, as no healthcare services will be available during the strike period.
