Kenya's Faith Leaders Unite to Protect Children: A Landmark Declaration and Handbook Launched

In a major step forward for child protection, Kenya's religious leaders have signed a landmark declaration committing to safeguard children from violence, abuse, and harmful practices. The National Religious Leaders' Declaration on Child Safeguarding was endorsed at the first National Religious Leaders' Summit on Child Safeguarding, convened by the Ministry of Gender, Culture, and Children Services, the Inter-Religious Council of Kenya (IRCK), and UNICEF.
The declaration is accompanied by the launch of "Faith for Life: Protecting and Safeguarding Our Children," a faith-based handbook designed to equip religious institutions with practical tools to strengthen child-friendly policies and promote positive parenting.
Cabinet Secretary for Gender, Culture, and Children Services, Hon. Hanna Wendot Cheptumo, emphasized the government's commitment to working with faith actors, civil society, and stakeholders to end violence against children. IRCK Chair, Sheikh Abdullahi Salat, reaffirmed the faith sector's responsibility in child protection, citing teachings from various faith traditions.
UNICEF Representative Dr. Shaheen Nilofer welcomed the united commitment and handbook as catalysts for meaningful change, saying, "When religious leaders speak clearly and consistently against violence, and when they promote compassion, dignity, and accountability, hearts change, and norms begin to shift in favor of our children."
This initiative marks a significant shift towards coordinated, values-driven leadership in child protection across Kenya. Would you like to know more about the declaration, the handbook, or the role of faith leaders in child protection?
