ODM in Turmoil: Sifuna Vows Court Battle Over Removal as Secretary-General

Nairobi Senator Edwin Sifuna has refused to step down as Orange Democratic Movement (ODM) Secretary-General, vowing to challenge his removal in court. The party's National Executive Committee (NEC) had ousted Sifuna, citing concerns about discipline and leadership conduct, and replaced him with Deputy Secretary-General Catherine Omanyo.

Hon, Sifuna flanked by prominent party members including Winnie Odinga, Siaya Governor James Orengo, and Embakasi East MP Babu Owino, dismissed the move as unconstitutional and politically motivated. "I remain the duly elected Secretary-General of ODM. I will be moving to court to challenge this decision," Sifuna said.

The removal has exposed deepening internal divisions within ODM, with Deputy Party Leader Godfrey Osotsi accusing an Oburu Odinga-led faction of being influenced by President William Ruto to "kill" the party from within. Sifuna has announced a major political rally in Kitengela, Kajiado County, signaling a counter-offensive against the party leadership.
The NEC maintains its decision was grounded in the party constitution, citing escalating cases of indiscipline among senior members. The party has also resolved to initiate the formal process of withdrawing ODM from the Azimio La Umoja One Kenya Coalition over alleged breaches of the coalition agreement.
