Violent Assault on Mtetezi Convenor Sparks Court Petition Against Energy CS

Mtetezi has condemned the violent assault on its National Convenor, Francis Awino, in what it describes as a dangerous escalation of the ongoing fuel scandal. Awino was attacked by hired goons who stormed a press briefing, assaulted journalists, and left him hospitalized with injuries.
The incident occurred shortly after Mtetezi publicly demanded the resignation of Energy Cabinet Secretary Opiyo Wandayi and Trade Cabinet Secretary Lee Kinyanjui, citing their alleged involvement in a controversial waiver process that enabled the importation of substandard fuel.
Although Awino has since been discharged from hospital, Mtetezi has filed a public interest petition in court seeking the immediate removal of both Wandayi and Kinyanjui. The petition argues that:
Their offices are directly linked to the waiver chain that facilitated the scandal.
Investigations have already led to arrests and resignations of junior officials.
Their continued stay in office undermines public confidence in accountability processes.
The assault on Awino raises serious concerns of intimidation against petitioners and whistleblowers.
Mtetezi emphasized that the attack marks a shift from a governance dispute into a grave matter of constitutional rights, freedom of expression, and public participation.
“This can’t be allowed to continue. It stops here… Wandayi and Lee Kinyanjui MUST go!” the movement declared in its statement.
