The Nairobi Hospital has honoured nurses for their dedication, sacrifice, and unwavering commitment to patient care during celebrations marking International Nurses Week 2026, with leaders calling for greater investment in the nursing profession to strengthen healthcare delivery across the country.
Speaking during the celebrations held at the hospital on Monday, Public Health and Professional Standards Principal Secretary Mary Muthoni reaffirmed the Government’s commitment to empowering nurses as a key pillar in the realization of Universal Health Coverage (UHC).
The Government of Kenya recognizes and greatly values the critical role nurses play in the delivery of Universal Health Coverage. Nurses are the backbone of our health system, providing frontline healthcare and strengthening communities across the country,” said the PS, who attended the event as the chief guest.
She noted that nurses currently manage nearly 75 per cent of Level 2 and Level 3 health facilities across Kenya, while continuing to play a central role in maternal healthcare, immunization, preventive medicine, and curative services.
According to the PS, the Government is prioritizing policies and investments aimed at improving nurses’ training, working conditions, career progression, leadership development, and retention.
The celebrations, organized by the National Nurses Association of Kenya (NNAK) – The Nairobi Hospital Chapter, brought together healthcare professionals, nursing leaders, and partners under this year’s theme,
“Our Nurses, Our Future: Empowered Nurses Save Lives.
The Nairobi Hospital Chief Executive Officer Felix Osano praised nurses for their commitment to delivering quality and compassionate healthcare, describing them as an indispensable pillar within the hospital’s healthcare ecosystem.
“Our nurses embody the very essence of who we are as an institution. Their dedication, commitment, and selfless service continue to ensure safe, high-quality patient experiences,” said Mr Osano.
He added that the hospital remains committed to strengthening the Nursing Division through continuous training, improved working conditions, and capacity development to support nurses in delivering world-class healthcare services.
Mr Osano also commended the NNAK–TNH Branch and the hospital’s Nursing Division leadership for championing excellence in nursing care.
