The ruling Kenya Political Party United Democratic Alliance (UDA) has intensified preparations for the upcoming Ol Kalou Constituency by-election after officially handing businessman and politician Mr, Samuel Muchina Nyagah the party nomination certificate following his victory in the party primaries.
The highly anticipated by-election, scheduled for July 14, 2026, is shaping up to be one of the most closely watched political contests in the Mt Kenya region, with the outcome expected to offer an early indication of shifting political loyalties ahead of the 2027 General Election.
Nyagah was officially unveiled as the UDA flagbearer on Saturday, May 9, after emerging victorious in the party nominations conducted a day earlier.
According to official results released by the ruling party, Nyagah secured 3,221 votes, narrowly edging out his closest challenger George Wambugu Kanuri, who garnered 3,077 votes in a tightly contested race.
The results reflected the growing political competition within UDA and highlighted the strategic importance of Ol Kalou Constituency in the broader Mt Kenya political landscape.
In a statement shared through its official X account on May 14, UDA said the successful conclusion of the nomination exercise marked the beginning of an aggressive grassroots campaign aimed at consolidating support across the constituency ahead of the by-election.
“We have completed our internal democratic process, and our focus shifts to the grassroots as we prepare to deploy our political architecture and a well-coordinated campaign to win the vote and confidence of the Ol Kalou electorate,” the party stated.
The party said its campaign strategy would heavily revolve around the government’s Bottom-Up Economic Transformation Agenda (BETA), the flagship economic model being championed by President William Ruto.
According to UDA leaders, the campaign will focus on economic empowerment, inclusive development, youth opportunities, infrastructure expansion, agricultural support, and programs aimed at improving the livelihoods of ordinary wananchi in Ol Kalou.
“The campaign will be built on an unwavering commitment to the Bottom Up Economic Transformation Agenda (BETA), inclusive development, and tangible progress that leaves no Ol Kalou resident behind,” the party added.
UDA Secretary General Hassan Omar Hassan praised the party’s National Elections Board (NEB) for overseeing
What he termed a transparent, free, fair, and credible nomination exercise despite the stiff competition witnessed during the primaries.
Hassan noted that the exercise experienced minimal disputes, with only one formal complaint filed and later resolved through the party’s Electoral and Nomination Dispute Resolution Committee (ENDRC), chaired by Adrian Kamotho.
He said the peaceful handling of the dispute demonstrated the party’s commitment to democratic processes and internal accountability.
The successful completion of the nomination exercise demonstrates the maturity of the party’s internal democratic structures and our commitment to ensuring credible processes,” Hassan said.
UDA leaders maintained that the nomination process strengthened party unity and positioned the ruling party favorably ahead of the mini-poll.
The Ol Kalou by-election is increasingly attracting national political attention due to the growing contest for influence in the Mt Kenya region, which remains one of the country’s most politically influential voting blocs.
The contest is expected to pit UDA against emerging political formations allied to former Deputy President Rigathi Gachagua, whose new political vehicle, the Democracy for the Citizens Party (DCP), has recently intensified grassroots mobilisation efforts across the region.
Political analysts view the by-election as more than just a local parliamentary contest, describing it as a symbolic battle for political supremacy between President Ruto’s allies and factions associated with Gachagua, who continues to enjoy significant influence in sections of Mt Kenya.
The outcome is expected to test the strength of UDA’s political machinery, voter loyalty to the ruling party, and the ability of opposition-aligned parties to penetrate areas previously considered UDA strongholds.
The mini-poll is also likely to serve as a referendum on the popularity of the Kenya Kwanza administration’s economic agenda, especially among farmers, small-scale traders, youth groups, and local business communities within Nyandarua County.
As campaigns begin to gather momentum, political temperatures are expected to rise, with both national and regional leaders likely to descend on Ol Kalou in the coming weeks in an effort to rally support for their preferred candidates.
With UDA projecting confidence and opposition-linked formations seeking to make political inroads, the Ol Kalou by-election is now emerging as one of the defining political contests in the Mt Kenya region ahead of the 2027 electoral cycle.
