Speaking during a press briefing on Tuesday, UDA Secretary General Hassan Omar Hassan defended the Kenya Kwanza administration, arguing that the sharp increase in fuel prices and the transport crisis affecting the country were caused by global economic and geopolitical factors beyond the government’s control.

Hassan Omar said the opposition was deliberately using the economic hardships facing Kenyans to fuel public anger and create political tension across the country.

“The current fuel challenges are not unique to Kenya. The world is facing serious geopolitical tensions affecting fuel supply and prices globally,” he said.

The UDA SG maintained that the government was working to stabilize the economy and cushion citizens from the rising cost of living, despite mounting pressure from transport operators and consumers demanding urgent intervention.

His remarks come amid nationwide protests and disruptions in public transport following the latest fuel price increases that triggered outrage among motorists, matatu operators and ordinary Kenyans struggling with the high cost of living.

Several towns across the country witnessed demonstrations, with some areas experiencing chaos, looting and destruction of property after suspected criminal gangs infiltrated the protests.

Opposition leaders have continued to pile pressure on the government, accusing it of failing to protect Kenyans from the rising prices of fuel, food and other basic commodities.

However, Hassan Omar accused critics of exploiting the frustrations of wananchi for political mileage instead of supporting efforts aimed at resolving the crisis.

He urged leaders to avoid statements that could escalate tensions and called for peaceful engagement in addressing the country’s economic challenges.

The UDA official further defended President Ruto’s administration, insisting that measures were being explored to ease the burden on Kenyans while ensuring economic stability.

As pressure continues to mount over the soaring fuel prices, the political blame game between the government and opposition leaders is expected to intensify in the coming days.
