Kenya has joined the global community in commemorating World Population Day 2026, with a renewed call for increased investment in young people as a pathway towards sustainable development and a more inclusive future.

The high-level forum was hosted by the National Council for Population and Development (NCPD), the lead government agency responsible for population policy, research and development planning.
Speaking during the event, leaders emphasized the need to prioritize young people’s health, education, skills development, employment opportunities and rights to enable them to fully participate in national development.
The event was graced by Dr. Masini Ichwara, Director General, State Department for Economic Planning, who served as the Chief Guest, alongside NCPD Board Chairman Hon. Ali Wario, Acting NCPD Director General Ms. Lucy Kimondo, and United Nations Population Fund (UNFPA) Kenya Officer-in-Charge and Head of Country Office Mr. Innocent Modisaotsile,

The celebrations, held under the theme “Realizing the hopes and aspirations of young people today and for the future,” brought together government leaders, development partners, youth representatives, and key stakeholders to reflect on strategies aimed at empowering the next generation.

The leaders noted that Kenya’s demographic future presents both opportunities and responsibilities, requiring deliberate policies and investments that place young people at the centre of development efforts.
NCPD highlighted that empowering the youth through quality education, access to healthcare, innovation opportunities, decent employment and protection of their rights is critical in unlocking the country’s demographic dividend.

The future of Kenya depends on how well we invest in our young people today. By prioritizing their health, education, opportunities, and rights, we can build a more inclusive, productive and prosperous society for generations to come,” stakeholders observed during the celebrations.
the forum also provided a platform for discussions on emerging population trends, youth participation in decision-making, and partnerships needed to accelerate progress towards sustainable development goals.
World Population Day is observed annually to raise awareness on population issues and the need for solutions that improve the well-being of communities while promoting equitable and sustainable growth.

As Kenya continues to navigate changing population dynamics, NCPD reaffirmed its commitment to strengthening evidence-based population policies and partnerships that support the aspirations of all Kenyans, particularly the youth.
