Kenya Renews Push for Religious Tolerance as Stakeholders Call for Stronger Interfaith Partnerships

Kenya has renewed its commitment to protecting freedom of religion and belief, with stakeholders calling for sustained collaboration among faith leaders, government institutions and communities to promote peaceful coexistence.

The call was made during a forum that brought together representatives from the National Cohesion and Integration Commission (NCIC), the National Assembly and other partner organisations to reflect on efforts aimed at strengthening religious freedom and social harmony in the country.

Participants highlighted that freedom of religion remains a fundamental constitutional right that must be safeguarded through inclusive policies, dialogue and respect for Kenya’s diverse faith communities.

The forum provided a platform for stakeholders to assess the impact of initiatives under the TOFORB Project, which has focused on promoting tolerance, encouraging interfaith engagement and addressing challenges that threaten peaceful coexistence.

Speakers noted that sustained conversations between religious leaders, government agencies and local communities have played a key role in reducing tensions, countering discrimination and creating avenues for addressing emerging challenges such as hate speech and violent extremism.

Stakeholders emphasized that interfaith dialogue should remain central in building trust among communities and preventing conflicts linked to religious intolerance.

The meeting ended with participants reaffirming their commitment to maintaining partnerships established through the project and ensuring that progress made continues beyond its official conclusion.

Organisers said the forum represented more than the closure of the TOFORB Project, describing it as a foundation for continued cooperation in advancing human rights, strengthening national cohesion and promoting a culture of tolerance across Kenya.

They expressed confidence that the relationships built through the initiative would continue supporting efforts to create a society where all citizens can freely exercise their religious beliefs while respecting the rights and freedoms of others.
