Nairobi, Kenya – Parliament has thrown its weight behind the Kenya Medical Research Institute (KEMRI) in its bid to secure KSh500 million required to complete the construction and operationalisation of a key research facility expected to Strengthen

 

Kenya’s capacity in medical innovation, disease surveillance, and healthcare solutions.

Members of Parliament said the investment would be critical in advancing local scientific research, reducing reliance on foreign institutions, and positioning Kenya as a regional hub for health research and biotechnology.

The lawmakers noted that completing the institute would provide researchers with modern infrastructure needed to conduct studies on emerging diseases, develop locally relevant interventions, and support evidence-based policymaking in the health sector.

The KEMRI management has indicated that the additional funding will help finalize ongoing works and equip the facility with the necessary laboratories, technology, and support systems to enable full-scale operations.

Parliamentarians emphasized that investment in research infrastructure is essential for addressing Kenya’s healthcare challenges, including infectious diseases, non-communicable diseases, and future public health emergencies.

The country cannot achieve“ sustainable healthcare solutions without investing in research and innovation. Supporting institutions such as KEMRI is an investment in the health and wellbeing of future generations,” lawmakers said.

The push comes amid growing calls for increased government funding for science, technology, and innovation as Kenya seeks to strengthen its health systems and build domestic capacity in medical research.

Once completed, the facility is expected to enhance collaboration between Kenyan scientists, universities, government agencies, and international research partners while creating opportunities for training and employment in the health research sector.

KEMRI remains one of Kenya’s leading institutions in biomedical research, contributing to breakthroughs in areas such as infectious diseases, vaccines, diagnostics, and public health programmes.

The parliamentary backing is expected to accelerate efforts to secure the remaining funds and ensure the project is completed within the planned timelines.
