community leaders, youth representatives, traders, farmers, caregivers, and community organizers from across Kenya, stand united in defence

We, the grassroots women, community leaders, youth representatives, traders, farmers, caregivers, and community organizers from across Kenya, stand united in defence of accountability, transparency, and the right of every citizen to speak freely.

Today, we raise our voices over the growing intimidation, harassment, threats, and attacks targeting individuals and organizations that continue to demand accountability and protect public interest.
Civil society organizations and community advocates play a critical role in strengthening democracy. They work alongside communities to ask difficult but necessary questions: Why do hospitals lack medicine despite allocated resources? Why do roads remain incomplete despite public funding? Why do citizens continue to struggle when resources meant to improve lives disappear?

When those who ask these questions are threatened, it is not only their voices that are attacked  it is the voice of every Kenyan who depends on accountable leadership and responsible use of public resources.

As grassroots women, we understand the cost of poor accountability. When health facilities fail, women and families carry the burden. When markets and local economies suffer, households lose income. When public resources are misused, communities are left without essential services.

When accountability is attacked, corruption thrives. And when corruption thrives, women and families pay the highest price.
We are deeply concerned by the growing climate of fear created through intimidation, unlawful surveillance, harassment, and attacks against civic actors.

A country where citizens fear asking questions is a country where corruption can flourish unchecked.

We refuse to accept a Kenya where demanding accountability is treated as a crime.

WE THEREFORE CALL ON THE GOVERNMENT OF KENYA TO:

(1)  Immediately stop all forms of intimidation, harassment, surveillance, and attacks against human rights defenders, civil society organizations, journalists, and citizens exercising their constitutional rights.
(2). Protect individuals and organizations working to promote transparency, accountability, and good governance.
(3). Ensure that law enforcement agencies operate within the Constitution and protect citizens rather than intimidate those seeking answers.
(4)   Strengthen mechanisms that allow communities to participate freely in governance and oversight of public resources.
Accountability is not a threat to leadership; it is a foundation of good governance. Protecting those who speak for communities is protecting Kenya’s future.
