Ambassador Ida Odinga today led a special commemoration to celebrate the life, legacy and enduring contribution of the late former Prime Minister Raila Amolo Odinga, bringing together family, friends, political leaders, community representatives and Kenyans who continue to remember his contribution to the country.
The commemoration provided an opportunity to honour Raila Odinga’s remarkable journey in public service and reflect on the values that defined his decades-long contribution to Kenya’s political, democratic and social development.
Speaking during the occasion, Amb. Ida Odinga described the commemoration as a moment not only to mourn the loss of a beloved husband, father and national figure, but also to celebrate a life dedicated to public service and the pursuit of a better Kenya.
She said Raila’s legacy extended beyond political leadership, noting his longstanding commitment to democracy, constitutionalism, social justice, national unity and the empowerment of ordinary citizens.
“Today, we celebrate Raila not only for the positions he held, but for the values he stood for and the lives he touched throughout his journey,”
Amb. Ida said.
She acknowledged the outpouring of support and solidarity from Kenyans and friends of the family, saying the continued remembrance of Raila demonstrated the profound impact he had on individuals and communities across the country and beyond.
The commemoration also reflected on Raila’s contribution to Kenya’s democratic transformation, including his role in the struggle for political pluralism, constitutional reform and greater accountability in public leadership.
Family members and other speakers paid tribute to his resilience, determination and commitment to public affairs, while recalling his personal qualities as a father, husband, mentor, friend and community leader.
Amb. Ida Odinga urged Kenyans to preserve the positive values associated with Raila’s life by promoting peace, unity, dialogue and service to the nation.
She said the best way to honour his memory was to continue working towards a Kenya where every citizen has an opportunity to live with dignity, access opportunities and participate meaningfully in the country's development.
